This Halifax house had a circuitous collection of ground floor rooms before this renovation. The renovated footprint created a ‘great room’ at the rear of the house, containing a new dining space, kitchen, siting area, and small powder room. We used local ash wood, white washed, to create spaces for children’s cubbies, with barn doors and contrasting wall tile and textures to designate particular kitchen work areas in an otherwise open space.
