Weather House

Located on an exposed and remote coastal site in Kingsburg, Nova Scotia, this residence is shaped by both climate and constraint. Restrictive site covenants limited the allowable building footprint, leading to a design strategy that cantilevers portions of the house outward to expand the living spaces while minimizing ground disturbance.

Designed to support both daily living and work-from-home life, the primary living spaces are elevated to capture expansive Atlantic Ocean views, the shifting coastal light, and quieter moments of retreat throughout the day. Interior spaces are organized around light, material continuity, and carefully framed views.

Wood interiors, including extensive eastern ash millwork and ceilings, are paired with exposed concrete floors and masonry elements that provide thermal mass, durability, and a quiet material restraint. These materials contrast with the ruggedness of the surrounding landscape and reinforce a sense of shelter within the exposed coastal setting.

Clad in naturally weathering eastern cedar planks and battens, the house is designed to withstand the harsh maritime climate of wind, salt air, snow, and intense seasonal exposure.
