Rift House

Built for an active client who wanted a low-maintenance cozy surfing getaway, Rift House takes its cue from the raw, windswept coastal geology. Located at the point of a peninsula reaching into the Atlantic, the house is comprised of two abstract, faceted volumes separated by a glazed entry.  One block contains bedrooms, bathroom, gear and utility spaces.  The other is a fully open Living space, with wood-clad loft ceiling, a woodstove, and striking walnut cabinetry in kitchen and dining areas kitchen millwork, and large windows facing out to the ocean and adjacent coastal beach.

The site strategy retains as much of the tree canopy as possible, and aims to conceal car access, parking and septic in order to as best as possible preserve the elemental, natural and un-tamed quality of the place.
